BOLTON ROAD COLLECTION

Bolton Road Collection is an elegant, new(ish) restaurant and bar along Rosebank’s vibrant art strip. The regeneration on the corner of Jan Smuts and Bolton together with Keyes Art Mile further north in Rosebank, is pretty exciting. The joint has beautiful decor, it’s a huge airy space that has some intimate corners and nooks. A lot of love went into the decor here.  There’s modern industrial feel but some hints of colonial decor too, like the wicker chairs and mosaic 70’s revival tiles. All in all, it makes Bolton Road Collection just a tiny bit homely but still gives the feeling that you’ve ‘gone out’ somewhere special. I popped by for a quick lunch between shoots with my camera-shy friend, photographer JP Hannekom and we felt welcome instantly.

JP is a strict vegetarian so we looked through the veggie options on the menu. Just for clarification (some people have asked if I’m vegan/ veggie), I try to eat vegetarian as much as possible and aim at one vegan meal daily, I do however have one meal a week with meat. And that day was not my ‘meat-meal day’. We ordered the From The Field platter, so we could taste little bits on offer. The platter serves four as a starter and made a huge lunch for two, it’s got asparagus arancini, marinated buffalo mozzarella, goats cheese and sweet corn spring rolls, potato churros, grilled watermelon and feta, smoked olives and charred bread. Potato churros are the way forward. These morsels are creamy, crispy and cheesy at the same time. Grilled watermelon is featuring on summer menu if I can get to taste just a little bit as good as The Bolton Road Collection’s. The are dips that accompany the board are good to break up the flavours and textures because apart from the watermelon and olives it is quite a starch and cheese based platter. But still completely satisfying and delicious. We sent the board back empty which considering the serving size, was quite a feat towards the end of the meal. Next time I go I’d like to try the Heritage Tomato Salad as a lighter option.

And to drink? The drinks menu is comprehensive with classic and signature cocktails, a Gin Locker to ‘make your own concoction’, craft beers and ciders, select whiskies and a wine list. JP got a Hummingbird, named for Bolton Road Collective’s logo, with vodka, lavender syrup, strawberry juice and sparkling water. Light, refreshing, delectable and a very pretty shade of pink. I needed to stay sober so I got freshly squeezed pomegranate juice which I’d never tried before. Freshly squeezed pomegranate juice is amazing, here’s hoping that it becomes a new super food so everyone can try it.

Bolton Road Collection is great for a lot of occasions- from quick catch-ups with friends, tapas and wine for a girls (or boys) night or family meals. I’ve seen at least one successful event held there in the month that the spots been open. I’m looking forward to many a meal and tipple there. Have you been through to Bolton Road Collection?
