Continuing my series on switching to Cruelty Free products I thought I’d show you my basic makeup kit. It’s taken a while to rehaul my cosmetics bag but I’ve now got (almost) everything I need. I decided to strategically buy nudes and peachy hues across skin, eyes and lips as a starter beauty kit because the statements colours and textures can always come later. I also like to balance out my purchases between high-end brands like Smashbox, Urban Decay and Inglot with brands that are kind to the bank balance.
I actually start on my skin with a eye product- weird I know- but eye shadow never stays on my eyelids after lunch time. I think my skin absorbs all the pigment double time. So I apply an eye shadow base or primer before anything else. I’ve tried both GOSH Prime ‘n’ Refresh Illuminating Eye Roll-On and NYX HD Eye Shadow Base. The GOSH Prime ‘n’ Refresh says it illuminates and ‘instantly tightens’ and it does both of those but it didn’t sit nicely underneath eye shadow or creams on my skin. It didn’t help the product stay on longer than usual either but it is great to put on with just mascara if you want some brightening around the eye area. Use it on a very natural face with just BB cream and hightlighter and you’re good to go. The NYX HD Eye Shadow Base is something I’ve bought again and again. Not only does it keep eye colours on for longer, but I’ve found that if I put it underneath the eye area before foundation and concealer, I don’t get panda eyes! Again, it improves the appearance of the skin around the eye on it’s own, so sometimes I just wear this with mascara.
I bought The Body Shop Vitamin E Cool BB Cream because I really like the lighter finish of BB Creams for day. This BB Cream only one shade- Glowing Shade, which is meant to illuminate the skin. And it does, but I don’t love the glow everywhere on my face so I use it as a cream highlighter on cheekbones, temples and the bridge of my nose. Foundation is possibly the trickiest thing to find your match for. I struggled and triend a few brands. I was at the point of dragging a makeup artist friend (who hates malls) to the mall for a day before finding a friendly face at the Inglot counter. Inglot HD Perfect Coverup Foundation in 80 is a really good when I want heavier coverage and it has staying power. I love Inglot’s super sleek packaging too. To finish I use a light dusting of Essence All About Matt Fixing Compact and I keep it in my purse with an Essence powder brush for touch ups.
Urban Decay Naked Flushed in Native is a bronzer, highlighter and blusher kit with a really hot pink blush that’s perfect for spring and summer. The Highlighter in this kit has become my daily go-to. For a more subtle blush that works year-round I use Woolworths Cheeks Powder in Peach Melba.
My basic kit is missing a good concealer, as soon as my hunt for a reliable, stay-put one has ended I’ll let you know.
I got the Wet ‘n’ Wild Eyeshadow Trio in Walking on Eyeshells, because Cruelty Free Kitty mentioned it in her amazing post on 25 Cruelty Free MAC Eye Show Dupes. It has close colour matches to Shroom, Naked Lunch and Cork. I mix it with other eye shadows because I’m not the biggest fan of the iridescent texture unless it’s for a night out. A palette I use a lot that’s not pictured here is the NYX Love in Paris Eye Shadow Pallette in Madeleines and Macaroons, it’s got matte and satin finishes that I prefer for day wear.
Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Pencil in Perversion is ideal for as a soft eyeliner that doesn’t comprimise on highly saturated pigment. There’s so much you can do with this long lasting smudge proof pencil, I love it for a smoky eye. Gosh Amazing Length’n Build Mascara gives ridiculously long-long lashes and doesn’t flake off. My luxury eyebrow purchase is Smashbox Brow Tech To Go in Brunette– triangular shaped pencil is soft and doesn’t give the hard, sharp look that traditional pencils do. I love the gel brush wand part of the duo. The combination seems to make my eyebrows fuller, softer and more youthful than other products and techniques. For a powder brow set with more buildable coverage, Essence have a cute little set with two shades and a small brush called the Eyebrow Stylist Set (not pictured).
Ok so you know you I spoke about adding statement textures to your makeup set after covering the basics? Well, I kinda went all in on the matte lip trend. But this finish just makes me so happy! Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick in Paris Pink, is a luxurious flat matte pastel pink with long wear and it isn’t drying! NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream isn’t as flat as most of the matte lipsticks and lip creams that are popular right now so it’s good way to dip your toes into the trend. I have two shades, Instabul is the pretty pink and Stockholm is the yellow toned nude. These don’t completely dry on the lip- which is great if your lips aren’t 100% moisturised- but don’t press your lips together when you wear it. The Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick stays on pretty long, I only reapply after meals whereas the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams need top ups after drinking coffee or sipping a smoothie.
