Jade Mulvaney is a storyteller, filmmaker, movie maker and soothsayer who recently moved to Johannesburg to make magic directing content for @5tudio ( sibling of between10and5).
When I asked Jade to describe herself she had this to say, “Gypsy-Explorer-Spanish at heart- Everything film-Story obsessed-Empath.” Personally, I think the world could do with more empaths and their empathy. Jade may be film obsessed but she’s also a prolific reader, with her taste ranging from classics, to rock goddess biographies. “Everything in my mind is a narrative for a potential feature film. I am addicted to people. To details. To moments, to beauty, to truth.”

“Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic”
Desperation for love, for beauty, for life, for living. Thirst for more, always more. And then…the ruthless reality of being human. Disgustingly human. Our primal instincts, demanding. I found myself curious as to the dark elements of my own self – I felt afraid to explore. The extremity in which Dorian’s character evolved – riveting. Give me anything by Oscar Wild. Violently sucked into this story. There are lines from this book that still live in the far corners of my heart.

“It’s the tragedy of loving, you can’t love anything more than something you miss”
This kid. The relationship between him and his pop. And people. Humans being beautiful humans. I am fascinated by the concept of connectivity. Strangers being strange &  strangers who open their hearts and doors to you – I would quickly forget that I had only just met them. Every time a new character was introduced, the story played out vividly for me – it was as if I met these characters with him, side by side we adventured together.
Moreover, the layout of this book was a visual treat!!!

“In this dirty minded world, you are either someone’s wife or someone’s whore. And if you’re not either people think there is something wrong with you….but there is nothing wrong with me”
John Irving is my favourite author. He has a unique/obscene/mischievous sense of humour. I first read this book when I was 16. I remember thinking : “This is weird, these characters are clearly not mentally well” laughing hysterically and re-reading parts because I couldn’t believe what I had just read.  “Jenny” was the first female character I had met (in a book) at the tender age of 16 that seriously gave society the middle finger. She became a hero to me in many ways.

JUST KIDS – Patti Smith

“I imagined myself as Frida to Diego, both muse and maker. I dreamed of meeting an artist to love and support and work with side by side.”
I was living in Spain in 2012 when my Argentinian boyfriend at the time,  bought me this book. He told me everything about Patti Smith reminded him of me. I was intoxicated by the depth of friendship this story told. Raw & vulnerable. An exciting glimpse into the 70’s in New York.  I found it unexpected and inspiring.

Post Office – Charles Bukowski

I watched a documentary on youtube about Bukowski. He was drunk in the interview and literally hit his wife . He growled when he spoke and he looked and behaved like a monster. Then, at the end of the documentary, one of his poems (Bluebird)  was illustrated. That, was when I had an urge to read his work. This book made me realize what it means to have guts. Bukowski had guts. There were moments in this book where I was moved to tears by the depth of his turmoil. He would behave like a pig and then for a brief second allowed you in. Raw, real – hit me in the feels.
“there’s a bluebird in my heart thatwants
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,I say, stay in there, I’m not going
I say, stay in there, I’m not goingto
to let anybody see
