Razor Charlie

Razor Charlie is serving up Latin American street food, tequila and a whole lot of fun in the heart of Kramerville, Sandton. The new eatery has an outdoor cafe approach with touches of South American style and iconography. Razor Charlie takes over a spot in the same space that holds much loved Joburg gems like Amatuli, Katy’s Palace Bar and Sir James van der Merwe. If you want to try out Razor Charlie, they’re celebrating Dia De Los Muertos (Day of The Dead) with Katy’s Palace Bar on the 28th of October. Razor Charlie has a relaxed, street-side feel with really friendly and accommodating staff. It’s location and atmosphere make it ideal for a quick working lunch or sundowners after a tough day. There are also parties hosted by Katy’s Palace Bar and Sir James van der Merwe often so it’s a great way to start a night out. I tried the Paloma, a blend of grapefruit, lime and soda with Jose Cuervo Traditional tequila. It’s fresh, thirst-quenching and not overly sweet. Definitely my favourite cocktail of the day. The classic daiquiri was also great and the drinks menu includes an assortment of wines and beers if cocktails aren’t your thing.

The breakfast menu makes it a fun breakfast or brunch option for weekends too. I sampled the Huevos Rancheros, a tortilla topped with fried eggs, avo and flavoured with Sofrito. Sofrito is a sauce used in Spanish and Latin American cuisine, not to be confused with sala. Sofrito changes slightly depending on the region, but it’s packed with flavour.

One of the other classic Mexican dishes on the menu are fish tacos. I didn’t try these but my friend said the fried fish was crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle, which went well the crunchy salad, saucy topping and hard taco shell. Something slightly less familiar but still delicious was the combination of green beans, broccoli, peas and feta with crushed nachos in the Green Salad.  Nachos are about to become my new addition to any slightly boring salad this summer. The veggies were crisp and the flavours and textures were balanced. It also didn’t leave me hungry but it might have been because of the Elotes. Charred corn topped with lime, chilli salt and grilled cheese is a phenomenal combination.
