The Fussy Vegan

Vegan food that’s convenient, healthy and doesn’t break the budget? Almost unheard of in Joburg! Until The Fussy Vegan opened a few months ago. Offering quick grab-n-go meals, sit down options and some deli-style items, it really means there’s no excuse not to try adding some plant-based meals to your routine.

When a scroll through Instagram showed me a vegan spot just around the corner, I couldn’t it.  When the spot and the food both looked great- I was in more shock. So I made sure to stop by The Fussy Vegan as soon as I could and I’ve been back nearly every week since. This is really the type of local business that I hope thrives and gets community support.

The ethics, products and service are all fantastic. Owner Werner Prinsloo, believes that healthy vegan food shouldn’t be inaccessible and unaffordable. Part of the deli section at The Fussy Vegan includes fresh green juices, nut milks, kombucha, vegan yoghurt and cheeses, imitation meat products, cruelty-free personal care and eco-friendly items like Restraw’s glass straw sets. The team has recently expanded (a good sign I hope) and the store staff are just as interested in customers and how they can help give a good experience, as the owner himself.  The slogan ‘Fussy about what I eat, Vegan because I care’ is apt here. With that said, let’s talk food!

The first thing I tried at The Fussy Vegan is still one of my favourites- The BLT. Their bacon is seitan based from local brand Herbi Vohr. It comes on a delicious homemade health loaf. The bacon is so convincing that I bought some home with me from the deli section. The smokehouse style Pulled Oyster Mushroom Sandwich with red cabbage and dill cucumber slaw is spectacular. There’s a selection of toasted sandwiches too, including (imitation) cheese & tomato and tofu mayo & bacon. Sandwiches and toasties start at R45 and come in a gluten-free option.

The Fussy Vegan does ‘Meals of The Day’ to switch things up for regulars and there are monthly menus for seasonal changes. I’ve previously had the Mac ‘n’ Cheese and tried the Burrito Bowl absolutely loved both. Pictured here, are the Chickpea Schnitzle and the Mushroom & Lentil Lasange from the March menu. The schnitzel is made from sesame and sprouted quinoa, served with coconut creamed spinach and topped with a creamy mushroom sauce. It’s a very convincing schnitzel with a great texture, I really enjoyed the creamed spinach too. The Mushroom & Lentil Lasagne is full of flavour, but mine was a little dry. That being said, I’m still glad that ordered it, I enjoyed the meal and left with a full, happy belly thanks to the generous portion sizes. These meals start at R50.
